In the UK, schools must include teaching about drugs, alcohol and tobacco as part of the health and mental wellbeing curriculum. But how effective is this at preventing drug misuse, and how do we know the best approach for structuring these lessons?
A recent study in the US surveyed 500 young people to establish where they learnt about drugs, and which methods of drug education were likely to be the most effective.
The study showed that the most common source of drug education was from school. Interestingly, 36% of those surveyed believed that learning about the possible dangers of substance usage was the most effective teaching method. This was followed by testimonials from recovered addicts and scared straight approaches.
So what does this mean for content of Drug education classes? It seems that in order to be effective, ‘scare tactics’ work best!
